Rugby League’s oldest and most famous trophy will hit the high seas on Monday when the draw for the second round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup takes place aboard the Royal Navy vessel, HMS Illustrious.

The second round sees the entry of the three Armed Forces teams and the 14 National Conference League Premiers Division clubs, who join the 11 sides who have negotiated the preliminary and first rounds of the competition.

Two members of the Royal Navy Rugby League team are currently serving aboard the helicopter carrier HMS Illustrious, which is on duty in the North Sea. The Navy will be hoping to go at least one better than a year ago, when they acquitted themselves well at Warrington Wizards before losing a second round tie 28-20.

The second round ties will be played over the weekend of March 10-11.

The winners of the 14 second round ties will go through to the third round over the weekend of March 24-25, when the Co-operative Championship and Championship One clubs enter the fray.

The draw will be conducted by England Head Coach Steve McNamara and a serving crew member from HMS Illustrious.
