England captain Jamie Peacock was today savouring a place in the record books as he began preparations for his next big occasion - a visit to see the Queen.

The veteran Leeds forward, who was in the Rhinos team crowned Heinz Big Soup World Club Champions last night, will go to Buckingham Palace on Wednesday to receive the MBE he was awarded in the New Year Honours List for services to rugby league.

“It’s great to go there on the back of this win,” Peacock said. “I’m looking forward to it.

“It’s very special. My family are very excited. My mum and dad are going as well as my wife, so it’s going to be a big day.”

Appearing in an unprecedented sixth World Club Challenge, Peacock set a new individual record of four wins with a 26-12 triumph over Manly Sea Eagles at Headingley.

“I don’t think you can compare them,” he said. “They’re all great feelings because you’re always playing against great opposition.”

Ten years on from his first success with Bradford Bulls, Peacock typically led from the front as the injury-hit Rhinos pack subdued a tremendous second-half onslaught by the Australian champions.

Trailing 16-6 at the break, the visitors roared back into contention, cutting the gap to just four points with Daly Cherry-Evans’ try, and it needed some resilient defence by Leeds to keep them at bay.

“Everyone thought we had gone in the Grand Final when St Helens went 16-8 in front but there is a lot of resolve in this team,” Peacock said.

“We don’t know when we’re beaten. We knew we would have chances if we were able to stick with them.”

The Leeds players were given today off to celebrate but Peacock knows there will be little time to bask in the glory as they prepare to resume their Stobart Super League campaign against Widnes Vikings next Sunday.

“It’s good that we’ve a little break,” he said. “We’re not playing for another nine days which gives us time to celebrate tomorrow and it’s back to work on Monday.”

Leeds captain Kevin Sinfield insists his side have the mental strength to ensure their latest success will not go to their heads.

“We’ve got some blokes who have experienced it before,” he said. “We’ve got a head coach who knows that we’ve got to get straight back on the horse next Sunday against Widnes.

“After we beat Melbourne a few years ago, we went to Cas the following Friday and got turned over so we know how quickly things can change in sport. We know how much Widnes will come for us.

“We’ve got a bit longer turnaround. We’ll get together tomorrow but come Monday morning we’ll be back in working hard.

“There are some things we need to fix up. We’ll prepare for Widnes exactly the same as we did for Manly. We will not have any complacency this time.”

Leeds look certain to be without England second rower Jamie Jones-Buchanan for the next few weeks after he aggravated a knee injury against Manly.
