Victorious students toasted at Red Hall
The victorious Great Britain Students Rugby League team were given a champagne reception in Leeds this week in recognition of their historic Student Ashes success earlier this year.
The squad and management team were all welcomed to the RFL headquarters at Red Hall by RFL Chairman Richard Lewis, who addressed the visitors and praised their efforts in Australia.
The tourists produced some great displays in the three week trip in July which culminated in a 2-0 series win.
Following a 20-20 draw in the first Test the Lions followed up with a hard-fought 10-4 victory in the second, before a superb 24-10 win in the third match sealed the series victory.
“Winning any Test series is a great achievement, but doing so in Australia is terrific,” said Lewis.
“The series win is the first time we have ever won the Student Ashes in Australia and it is the first success since 2000.
“I would like to congratulate coach Paul Fletcher and all the players and management and let’s hope this is the start of a golden era for the sport at international level.”
