Winning on the agenda for Worrincy

Halifax winger Rob Worrincy believes his side have hit top form at just the right time

Halifax winger Rob Worrincy believes his side have hit top form at just the right time as they prepare to face Sheffield Eagles in a Co-operative Championship Elimination Semi-final at Bramall Lane on Sunday, September 18 (3.00pm).

The defending champions finished the regular season as the lowest ranked team in in the play-offs, but an impressive 32-22 away win over Batley last week has ensured they are still in with a chance of retaining their crown.

“The team spirit is really good and we’ve got our form right at the best possible time.” said Worrincy. “We had a great win against Batley. We hadn’t beaten them all season so it was very satisfying to finally get a victory over them in such an important game as well.

“There were a lot of tired bodies at the end of that match, it was very physical, but there were a lot of happy faces when the final whistle went.

“We had a disastrous start to this season, we lost some good players in key positions and we took some time to gel so we didn’t hit the ground running like we would have liked but we’ve got another chance to get through to the final now and we need to take it.”

Worrincy was a key member of the Halifax team which knocked Sheffield out of the competition at the Final Eliminator stage last season with a 42-16 victory and is keen repeat that result on Sunday.

“Sheffield will be another bruising encounter,” he said. “There’s a lot of history between the two teams because we knocked them out at the semi-final stage last season and there’s also a lot of ex-players on both sides of the pitch.

“I have no doubt that former Sheffield lads like myself will get a hostile reception but hopefully we’ll let our performance do the talking. When we play to our best I think every other team knows that we’re a tough side to beat.

“We’ve been focused in training and now we’re ready for the game. It’s another do-or-die fixture and it might be the last game for a few lads at the club and no one at the club wants to go out on a losing note.”
