Sponsored Walk HOTTING up for Sue and the Cougars
Excitement for the 500-mile sponsored walk for Honour Our Troops (HOT) is warming up for Oakworth’s Sue Gow and the Keighley Cougars.
The aim of the walk is to raise money for ‘HOT’ which was set up by a serving soldier last year on the internet social network site ‘Facebook’.
‘HOT’ is made up of people from all over the UK who all have a common aim; to boost the morale of our troops wherever they may be.
Many events are taking place all over the country to raise money for a huge (free) concert in aid of troops serving abroad, but mainly in Afghanistan. Money from the concert will be divided between the Army, Navy and RAF Benevolent Funds.
Cougar Park is to be an overnight stopping off point for the leg of the walk from the Army Garrison at Catterick to Leeds via Harrogate and Keighley and the Rugby League club is offering both accommodation and breakfasting facilities for the walkers.
Helen Carter, the Keighley Cougars General Manager, said: “We’re delighted to support this worthy cause and to make our facilities available to the walkers.
“Some of the club’s personnel will be undertaking the Cougar Park to Leeds leg of the walk and it’s wonderful to be part of all the excitement.”
Sue, who is the Keighley and District organiser for the ‘HOT’ walk, held a promotional day for the sponsored walk in Keighley’s Airedale Shopping centre last Saturday.
Sue said: “The day was a huge success; so much so that we had to pack up after only two and a half hours because we had handed out all 300 information flyers and sold all the wrist bands! The response was fantastic and I’m sure we will have the same support when we leave Town Hall Square in Keighley on January 7th.
“The promotional day raised in excess of £260 and I’d like to say a huge thank you to the people of Keighley not only for their support but for purchasing the wristbands; sponsoring me and making donations to our cause.
“I’d also like to thank Helen Carter the General Manager at Keighley Cougars and, of course, the club’s furry mascot Freddy Cougar; along with Mayor Councillor Margaret Ward and Alison Burston (the Catterick to Harrogate organiser) for supporting me on the day”.
The walk will set off on 4th January 2010 from Catterick Garrison HQ and arrive at Cougar Park in Keighley on the 6th January 2010. It will then leaving Town Hall Square for Leeds on the 7th.
