BME Community take Coaching Course
The RFL ran a Level 1 Rugby League Coaching Course yesterday (Sunday 17 May) at Kirkstall Rugby Academy in Leeds for members of faith, black and ethnic minority communities to become qualified Rugby League Coaches.
The scheme is a positive action initiative and is part of the RFL’s ongoing work alongside local Rugby League clubs to develop links with faith forum and community organisations. Engaging with BME and faith communities is part of the RFL's equalities agenda to overcome barriers to participation and create a welcoming environment for everyone whatever their race, religion, faith or belief.
As part of the initiative each participant was allocated a mentor to support their training.
Sarah Williams, the RFL’s Equity and Diversity Manager, said: “The purpose of the Level One Coaching initiative was to reach these under-represented groups and encourage them to be involved in our game.
“It was a fantastic event with around 30 members of the BME and faith communities traveling from all over the country to take part.
“As part of the RFL’s aim to increase participation we plan to target BME and faith communities. This free coaching course complements the work we are currently undertaking with a number of clubs based in areas with large BME and faith communities to increase dialogue between the clubs and the communities.
“We are hopeful that this will lead to an increase in involvement from people from such BME and faith communities in the game be that as players, coaches or spectators.”
The Level 1 Coaching Course is designed for adults who are looking for an introduction to working with groups of adults, junior Rugby League teams, or for parents of children in junior teams who want to get more involved.
The course provides an introduction to coaching Rugby League and good coaching practices as well as developing core Rugby League skills correctly and safely.
