Match officials are an essential part of Rugby League and without them, the game would not function. Their main duty is to enforce the pre-determined laws of the game (LINK) so that each and every match is played in the right spirit.
There are several differing match official roles including referees, touch-judges, in-goal judges and reserve referees. Matches in the professional structure may also utilise video referees, match commissioners and time keepers.
Each official is looked after by the RFL in co-operation with their local Referee Society and all have the opportunity to progress. Some may want to climb the ladder up to prestigious competitions such as Super League whilst others may enjoy being involved with local junior leagues.
