Lights go out on Whitehaven

Whitehaven missed the chance to go top of the Kingstone Press Championship when they went down 28-14 at home to Leigh.

The kick-off was put back nearly an hour due to a power cut which put out the Recreation Ground floodlights but the visitors quickly made up for lost time by establishing a 16-0 lead inside 30 minutes.

Former Whitehaven full-back Gregg McNally carved out an early try for Martyn Ridyard and went over for the second before hooker Sean Penkywicz added a third.

Whitehaven pulled a try back on the stroke of half-time through winger Craig Calvert but forwards Simon Finnigan and Tommy Goulden added further tries for the Centurions within 10 minutes of the re-start and Ridyard took his goal tally to four to make it 28-6.

Calvert scored his second try and centre Jesse Joe Parker went over for a third try three minutes from the end but Jamie Rooney\'s conversion, which would have given his side a losing bonus point, went wide.
