Twelve-man Widnes Vikings produced the biggest shock of the Super League season to stop Warrington Wolves going top of the table.

The Wolves were on a roll after nine straight wins but they paid the price for a slipshod display in wet conditions at the Halliwell Jones Stadium as Widnes overcame the dismissal of forward Hep Cahill to complete a derby double.

The Vikings were forced to play more than half the game a man short after Cahill was shown a red card by referee Phil Bentham for a high and late tackle that left Warrington full-back Brett Hodgson bleeding and badly concussed.

Widnes had earlier also lost hooker Grant Gore with a broken kneecap but they stunned their title-chasing hosts with a superb second-half display, 19-year-old winger Jack Owens scoring 12 of their 16 points.

The result overshadowed an earlier crowd disturbance among the Widnes fans, who must have feared the worst when they saw a team sheet lacking seven senior players through injury, including late withdrawals Jon Clarke and England forward Gareth Hock.

There was little hint of an upset when neat passing along the line enabled Warrington centre Simon Grix to take Hodgson's pass to open the scoring on 15 minutes.

Stefan Ratchford kicked the touchline conversion but that was the sum total of the Wolves' scoring.

Steady rain which began falling before kick-off made handling difficult and the home side managed to hang onto the ball long enough to create just two further scoring opportunities.

Winger Joel Monaghan collected Hodgson's kick to the corner but was held up while prop Mike Cooper lost the ball attempting to cross the line.

Widnes fared even worse in the tricky conditions but half-backs Kevin Brown and Joe Mellor managed to work them into a position to score on 29 minutes, Owens touching down at the corner following Brown's pinpoint kick for the first of his two tries.

It was the visitors' only tryscoring opportunity of the first half and the dismissal of Cahill looked to have ended their victory hopes.

Yet it served to spur the Vikings into action.

Had Chris Bridge been able to touch down Michael Monaghan's grubber kick seven minutes after the restart, Warrington might have gone on to win but the chance went begging and Widnes took full advantage.

A knock-on by England forward Ben Westwood on his own 20-metre area gifted the Vikings the perfect attacking position and Brown and Rhys Hanbury worked the ball out wide for left winger Patrick Ah Van to cross unopposed.

Six minutes later Hanbury broke from deep and the supporting Mellor took play on before putting in a deft kick off the side of his boot for Owens to collect and score his second try.

Owens, who missed his first kick at goal, succeeded with both touchline conversions to open up a 10-point lead.
