Audio commentary
The RFL have been running a trial for an RNIB fully portable audio commentary system that is aimed to significantly improve the match day experience of blind and visually impaired spectators. Thirty two dedicated fans from a range of RL clubs volunteered to try out the system and let us know what they thought. Despite a couple of hiccups with a few of the receivers the overwhelming feedback was very positive. It meant that blind and visually impaired fans could sit anywhere in the stadium with family, friends and club supporters rather than having to sit in a designated area. It was also easier to follow the game as we provided audio description, a highly skilled service which unlike radio commentary is a ball by ball account of the game that is unbiased whilst remaining passionate and enthusiastic about the game.
What next?
• Following the trial the RFL have agreed to purchase the system and ensure that all centrally organised games will have audio commentary.
• Recruit and train 14 volunteers from across Rugby league clubs to become RNIB accredited audio commentators
• Set up a forum for blind and visually impaired fans that will feed into the Rugby League Disabled Supporters Association (RLDSA) and offer guidance and advice to the RFL and clubs on access to all aspects of the game
• The RFL will encourage and support clubs to consider this system – the RNIB would be delighted to work with clubs individually and to bring the equipment to your club to try out.
