Recruiting Volunteers

Volunteers are a valuable resource and all clubs need more of them.

Below are some ideas for recruiting them; however it may be that you’ve some great ideas of your own that can help you attract people.

Press Releases

Combine an appeal for volunteers with a general news release that you’re sending out or even write a specific release on your search for new people.

When writing the release make it simple to understand so the copy can be lifted straight from it for inclusion without much need to alter it, plus try and send an accompanying photo.

Finally, don’t be afraid to chase up the editor to see when the release may be used.

Advertise

This is a good way for you to target a specific role within your club.

The advert can be used in several different ways, such as in your match day programme, in your local press or on websites.

An advert needs to be precise about what you’re asking for and should include contact details, location of the job and a brief description of what is expected, both from the club and the volunteer themselves.

All adverts should reflect the Child Protection Policy of the RFL.

Local Volunteer Centre/Development Agency

This is the simplest and quickest way for a club.

By registering with your local bureau they will post it on www.do-it.org.uk on your behalf.

Place Posters

Getting posters in prominent places in your local area is a good way of attracting attention to your club.

Places such as pubs, shops, hair dressers and sports centres will get your poster seen by a wide range of people.

Ask Spectators

Searching for volunteers may seem a daunting task, but how about looking a little closer to home?

If your club attract spectators to its games why not ask them.

Who knows some may have the kind of skills your after.

Hold An Open Day

By staging an open day it gives your club the chance to showcase itself and hopefully attract the attention of local people.

The day could be a festival which could see different games taking place at the same venue and whilst people are there it’s your opportunity to promote your need for more volunteers.

Social Events

There are many different types of social events a club can hold.

Some are more difficult to organise than others but ideas can range from a dinner, a race night, presentation night and live band nights.

Local Schools and Colleges

Some educational establishments run citizen classes which now involve a volunteering element.

Students may also be able to use volunteering and the work involved as examples on their CVs or course work.
