What is it?

The coaching staff at the club are responsible for a team’s training sessions and matches and getting the best possible performance from individual players and the team.

Why is it important?

To continually improve performance on the field the coaches must be actively seeking out and reinforcing a culture of striving to reach performance potential.

What does it look like?

Those working in the core activity of Coaching should:

  • Produce a coaching strategy for the club and a coaching plan to ensure that the club has sufficient qualified coaches to meet the player’s needs.
  • Create and implement coaching plans and individual sessions to RFL coaching standards and style.
  • Ensure that all coaching policies, plans and practices within the club are in line with the Equity, Child Protection, Health and Safety polices or Codes of Conduct as per the RFL.
  • Ensure records of club coaches and coaching qualifications are maintained.
  • Recruit and manage the coaching team at the club.
  • Ensure strong communication exists through all teams at all levels in the club.
  • Identify training needs on an ongoing basis and manage the delivery of training to meet those needs.
  • Assist other coaches in their continued professional development (CPD) and encourage coaches to apply for Service Area positions and to move through the Coaching Pathway.
  • Liaise with the player support functions to ensure peak performance at all times for all players.
  • Liaise with and supply information to the RFL Coaching team.
  • Ensure that all players are fit to participate in training sessions and competitions.
  • Adhere to the RFL Child protection Policy, the club’s Equal Opportunity Policy and any relevant code of conducts and ensure players do likewise.
  • Show a commitment to continued professional development, especially regarding matters of Health and Safety, Child Protection, Emergency First Aid, Equity in Your Coaching and Coaching Disabled People.

What skills are needed?

  • UKCC level 2
  • Motivate performers and volunteers, and communicate effectively with them. 
  • Make learning fun.
  • Use time efficiently and effectively 
  • Make use of appropriate equipment and adapt if necessary
  • Able to provide constructive feedback on performance
  • Provide structured planning and make best use of time available 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continued professional development

As you grow think about including more activities such as:

  • Recruiting inducting training, developing and line managing the coaching team and other specialist professionals at the club.
  • Devising and delivering player selection policies for the club
  • Assisting other coaches in their continued professional development (CPD) and encourage coaches to move through the Coaching Pathway.
  • Liaising with the all professionals in the Performance Team to ensure peak performance at all times for all players.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the coaches on a regular basis and the performance of the coaching team against the coaching strategy and plan.
