Rugby League is coming to the Racecourse on January 29th, when Crusaders take on Leeds Rhinos in the Engage Super League.
And, following on from the Super League Trophy last week, Rugby League’s Carnegie Challenge Cup, currently held by Warrington Wolves, has been making its way around local schools, community groups, companies and charities ahead of the big kick-off.
And the trophy stopped off at Tanyfron County Primary School and Ysgol Min y Ddol, where pupils got the opportunity to get up close and personal with one of rugby league’s most converted prizes.
Crusaders community Manager Matt Pritchard visited the Royal Welch fusiliers in Queensferry, who will be supporting the Crusaders at their upcoming match.
Tickets for Crusaders opening game start at £7 for children and £15 for adults. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Racecourse ticket hotline on 01978 262129 or by visiting the club shop. Tickets can also be purchased online by visiting www.crusadersrfl.com.
The Challenge cup is a knockout cup competition for rugby league clubs in Europe, organised by the Rugby Football League. Originally it was contested only by British teams, but in recent years the entry has been expanded to allow teams from France and Russia to take part.
It has been held annually since 1896, with the exception of the duration of the First World War and it involves amateur, semi-professional and professional clubs, though lower-ranked teams rarely reach the final stages of the competition. For the 2007 competition ninety-four teams entered the tournament.
The final is traditionally held at Wembley stadium, where last year Warrington Wolves beat Huddersfield Giants 25-16 to lift the cup in front of 80,000 fans.
