Aspiring reporters reach final of writing competition

Eight budding journalists have moved one step closer to reporting on the 2009 Carnegie Challenge Cup Final at Wembley after reaching the final of the Rugby League Reporter competition.

Following the success of the ‘Junior Journo’ competition last year, the RFL launched a separate student journalist competition aiming to capture the creative minds of University and College undergraduates between the ages of 17 and 22.

In its second year, the “Junior Journo” is open to secondary school children aged 11 to 16 who are interested in a career in sports media. The three shortlisted journalists are now only 500 words away from writing a match report at the final of the Carnegie Challenge Cup final held at Wembley in August.

The three aspiring ‘Junior Journos’ in the final are:

- Joe Cooper from Wallasey.
- Eliot McGuire from Huddersfield.
- Daley Schofield from Rochdale.

The five finalists for the student competition are:

- James Fish from Wigan.
- John Hill from Rochdale.
- Matthew Skirving from Hartlepool.
- Alistair Webster from Preston.
- Alan White from Preston.

The junior journalists will now attend the semi-final between St Helens and Huddersfield Giants on August 8, whilst the student finalists will attend the second semi-final, Warrington Wolves v Wigan Warriors the following day.

The match reports from both categories will be judged by Carnegie Challenge Cup Ambassador Barrie McDermott , who will be responsible for choosing the two journalists most deserving of a final place at Wembley. The winners will be rewarded with Press box tickets at Wembley Stadium for the Carnegie Challenge Cup Final on Saturday August 29, 2009 and attend the post-match press conference.

The Student Journalist winner will also be invited to take part in the traditional pre-match walkabout on the Friday before the Final.

Tickets for this year’s Carnegie Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday August 29 are still available with prices starting from just £21.
